Our newest trainee talks about her warm welcome

 

Yet another new starter has entered the Bayford Foundation‘s pioneering training environment. Here, rookie data inputter, Nicola Tuke, 43, talks about her first impressions of working for an organisation with a very progressive approach to helping its people succeed.

How did you come to be employed by the Foundation?

I was intrigued by an ad on Indeed.com’s online job board, which asked for friendly individuals who can talk to people. My interview with manager, Nick Elletson, was fantastic. It was so nice to find someone genuinely interested in the person, rather than ticking boxes.

What is your background?

I’m a Leeds lass, working in retail before having to take time off to look after my disabled daughter – I have three girls – and was very keen to restart my career.

What appealed to you about working with the Foundation?

Initially, the no-nonsense wording of the ad. Then when I spoke to Nick on the ‘phone, his attitude and passion were really impressive – and it was clear that he was investing a lot of time in getting the right people. This was reinforced when we met.

What did you learn in your first week?

That you can learn all the time from colleagues. I loved getting to know the company and the IT – as well as talking to customers.

What did you find most interesting and enjoyable?

The great mix of people from very different backgrounds. We’re all just one big happy family and I felt at home immediately.

What did you find most challenging?

The training process and encouragement of colleagues put me at my ease and reassured me so much that I wasn’t daunted by anything I was asked to do.

How helpful have the team been in helping you to settle in?

Very. Nick’s training was amazing and he was always there to help. I could ask colleagues anything I didn’t know, too. This was vital, as the only stupid question is the one not asked.

What are you looking forward to learning about?

Acquiring further communications skills and techniques. I hope to make the most of the training opportunities here to go into sales with TRFC.
