Our latest trainee gives us the lowdown on her dynamic first five days

New starter with The Bayford Foundation Vanessa Ible, a 46-year-old mother of two, hit the ground running as a trainee data cleanser and filled us in on her fast-moving first week.

How did you come to be employed by the Foundation?

Through PeoplePlus, which works with the Job Centre in Leeds to improve people’s lives through work and training. I had a lively and fun interview with Nick Elletson, who said I should be proud of the skills I had acquired as a stay-at-home mum – such as time management, leadership, negotiation and budgeting.

What is your background?

I’m a Leeds lass and before having my children, I worked in office administration at Leeds University and Thomas Danby College.

What appealed to you about working with the Foundation?

The flexible hours that allow me to fit in with the school run and the very laid back friendly environment.

What did you learn in your first week?

After a grounding in fuel cards and their providers, we got to grips with the computer and phone systems, before writing our own scripts for the first customer calls. Nick was always on hand to encourage and reassure, then when I spoke to client contacts, experienced staffers were there to help.

What did you find most interesting and enjoyable?

Learning a new skill set, gaining confidence in dealing with customers and finding that I could actually do what initially seemed a challenging proposition well.

What did you find most challenging?

The first time on the phone was nerve wracking, but once your script is right you find that everything flows well.

How helpful have the team been in helping you to settle in?

Very. Everyone is always ready to help and there are no problems about asking questions. I really did gain huge confidence from all my lovely, supportive colleagues.

What are you looking forward to learning about?

I want to further develop my sales skills and apply them in a career, hopefully with The Right Fuelcard Company, which runs or Foundation.
