Overcoming adversity to win through: we celebrate another trainee’s achievements

We’re delighted to mark the fantastic progress of a valued trainee who has overcome a series of tough challenges and is now among our top team at the Right Fuelcard Company (TRFC) which runs our pioneering Bayford Foundation

Having successfully completing six months training with our foundation, Ken Thomas joined our growing sales team in October 2015 and has hit the ground running in his new sales role. Already regarded as one of our top performers, clients and account managers have commended him for keeping them fully informed about every contract.

Ken’s achievements are even more impressive given his challenging circumstances. Employed in manual work since leaving school – a situation he never expected to change – he was knocked off his bike on the way to work in 2010. The accident, which left Ken virtually without the use of his left arm and with extensive damage to his left leg, resulted in him being on disability benefit for five years.

Determined to take control of his life again with a meaningful career, Ken was pointed in our direction by one of our partners, JobCentre Plus. His potential was spotted immediately, leading to Ken being offered a training place the same day – and his progress since then exemplifies how we help people turn their lives around with the right training and employment map.

Says Ken: “I realised that manual work was out of the question, but with no formal qualifications I was worried about reskilling to work in an office environment. I was therefore delighted to be offered the training programme, then the full time job.

“My role at the foundation entailed gathering data for the sales team. Through this process you get comfortable on the phone and acquire computer skills, customer relations ability and rapport building – none of which I had to start with.

“And it’s not just about learning, but gaining confidence. This is absolutely vital for sales and has continued on the job, with supportive colleagues and managers, weekly refresher sessions and monthly training courses.”

All of our tailored training programmes are supported and driven by our senior managers and directors who ensure everyone achieves their potential – and becomes the best that they can be.

Concludes Ken: “Everyone here was over the moon when TRFC was recently ranked number 34 in the Sunday Times Best 100 Small Companies to Work For – it was tremendous to see our strong culture receive public recognition.”
